Year 3’s Wonderful Writing

We have been working hard on our writing recently. We have created lots of awesome pieces of work and we thought we should share some. We have written about lighthouses, practiced spelling words where the /i/ sound is spelt ‘y’ and written poems about a journey, focusing on using interesting prepositions.

Here are some examples of these for you to enjoy:

Year 3 – Biographies!

This half term in Year 3 we have been learning all about biographies. Alongside our L.C.C topic, we have written biographies about Usain Bolt and learned all the techniques he uses to stay fast and about his life growing up in Jamaica.

Did you know he eats 20 McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets before every race?! He has a pet cheetah called Lightning that he races to keep fast!

Below are some photos of our epic big writes!

The Nowhere Emporium

In Year 5, we have been reading The Nowhere Emporium written by Ross MacKenzie. The children are gripped by the story of Mr Silver’s wonder-filled emporium and his apprentice Daniel, and are enjoying answering reading comprehension questions based on the text. We are half way through the story; I ‘WONDER’ what will happen next?

A Woolly Mammoth & a Sabre-Toothed Cat in Year 3!

Don’t worry – we haven’t really had a visit from these pre-historic animals!

For our English unit this half term, we have been using The Book of Bones by Balkan/Brewster for inspiration. We have focused on so many English features and devices, including: language for comparison, creating an informal voice through questioning, how to emphasise words using capital letters and italics and writing in the 1st person voice. WOW!

To link our writing to our topic in L.C.C about the Stone Age (who first lived in Britain?), we have chosen to write about Woolly Mammoths and Sabre Toothed Cats!

Did you know that a Woolly Mammoth is the earliest known creature to share DNA with a modern African Elephant? Did you know a Sabre-Toothed cat was NOT the Apex predator in their habitat?

Next week we are preparing for our Big Writes – they are going to be AMAZING!

Year 3 and the fearsome facts!

In Year 3, we are learning how to care for dragons!

We have learnt about lots of aspects of dragon care and have started inventing our own dragons. We noticed in our book, Dare to Care: Pet Dragon, that they include “Fearsome Facts” about each creature.

We drew our dragons and wrote some interesting Fearsome Facts of our own. Here are some examples for you to see!

Fairy Tales in Year 3!

This week in Year 3 we have finished our English unit on Fairy Tales.

We have looked at lots of fairy tales and learnt them off by heart, performed them, written about them, dissected them and thought a lot about their structure.

For our final piece, we were inspired by the illustrations you commonly see with fairy tales and we used this to watercolour the bordered edge of our big writes – we wrote an alternative ending to the traditional story of Snow White for our final pieces. We worked extremely hard and the Big Writes show that off!

Year 3 – Dare To Care: Pet Dragon

We have had a busy start to our English learning in Year 3! Our first unit is Instructions. We have been using a book called Dare To Care: Pet Dragon – this is all about caring for dragons.

We have learnt lots of new Grammar features, including Co-ordinating Conjunctions and Prepositions.

We are going to be using these to write our own instructions next week. I wonder if you have read this book before? What was your favourite part?
